CLIENT OBJECTIVE
Showplace Cinemas in Newburgh, Indiana was ready to add additional entertainment space to its successful twelve-screen, stadium-seated theatre. It would be a large addition – including spaces for bowling, dining, arcade games, meetings, and parties – on a tight site in a high-seismic-risk zone, complete with major grade changes. It was important to the client to create one unified facility, seamlessly merging the new addition into the larger existing building, anchored by a new central lobby.
PD SOLUTION
The Paradigm team utilized lightweight steel frames and stud wall construction to allow an economical connection to the existing building in this highly seismic area. Additional design elements included corrugated exterior siding used in different orientations for visual effect, and stepping off the addition floor down to avoid snow drifting on the existing roof. Colors, materials and accent lighting were used to unify the addition with the original building; sign orientation and contrasting building volumes brought attention to the multiple entertainment options now housed inside and accessible from the lobby. All of the project was completed in such a way that the doors could remain open for business during the remodel.
The project was a huge success and earned Indiana’s 2014 Associated Builders & Constructors Award for “Best Renovation”.
